These data on sexual health and wellbeing were collected in the latest phase of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). ELSA is a representative survey of a cohort aged 50 to >90 years, and has gathered detailed longitudinal data since 2002 on changes in health, economic and social circumstances as people prepare for and move into retirement and old age.

Only Place Contraception is Controversial is Politics
On June 7, 1965, in Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court legalized contraception (for married people, at least) and held that women and men have the right to privacy in making decisions about their sexual health. The case recognized, in law, the principle that women and men — not government — should decide when and how to plan their families, and paved the way for programs and policies that help women make health care decisions that affect their educational opportunities, their professional work, and their families.
Sexual and Relationship Dysfunction Is the True Cost of Porn
Over the past several years, I’ve written extensively on the nature and effects of pornography abuse. (Visit here andhere for some basic information.) Make room! We have another female “sexual dysfunction” to add to the list.
The first and only study on female premature orgasm has found that 40 percent of the women surveyed experienced rapid climax at least once in their sexual life, with around 3 percent chronically reaching orgasm too soon. Researcher Serafim Carvalho of Hospital Magalhães Lemos in Porto, Portugal, was surprised by the findings, but deeply sympathetic, noting, “For this group, female premature orgasm is more than bothersome. We think it’s as serious a distress as it is in men.” Read full article.
During IVF, Sex and Satisfaction Can Suffer
An Indiana University study has found that women undergoing in-vitro fertilization report that the process of infertility treatment has many negative impacts on their sexual relationship with their partner. Little attention has been given to the sexual dynamics of couples as they navigate infertility and treatments such as IVF, despite the important role that sex plays in a couple’s attempt to conceive a child.
“Sex is for pleasure and for reproduction, but attention to pleasure often goes by the wayside for people struggling to conceive,” said Nicole Smith, a doctoral student with the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington. Smith is conducting the study in collaboration with Jody Lyneé Madeira, associate professor in the IU Maurer School of Law. Read full article.
