New Study Sounds Warning on Hormone Replacement Therapy

Women who are past menopause and healthy should not take hormone replacement therapy in hopes of warding off dementia, bone fractures or heart disease, according to a new analysis by the government task force that weighs the risks and benefits of screening and other therapies aimed at preventing illness.

Statement Attributable to Linda Giudice, MD, PhD, President-elect of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM): “This study confirms what has been known for quite some time: Patients who need medical assistance to conceive have a somewhat higher risk of having children with birth defects than parents able to conceive on their own.  Patients considering medically assisted conception have been, and should continue to be, counseled on those risks prior to undergoing any treatment.”

Babies conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) have a higher risk of birth defects than those conceived naturally, but the increased risk may stem from the parents rather than the treatment itself, according to a study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

FDA Warns Health Professionals to Halt Use of Other-Sonic Generic Ultrasound Transmission Gel

An FDA press release reports, “U.S. Marshals, acting at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, have seized Other-Sonic Generic Ultrasound Transmission Gel located at Pharmaceutical Innovations Inc. in Newark, N.J., after an FDA analysis found that product samples contained dangerous bacteria. The agency reports that at least 16 patients from one hospital were infected with the bacteria.
